Beyond the Mirror by Paul O'Neill
This uncompromising play is a bold exploration of dystopia where the central character, Cavell, tries to find his place in a cruel and illogical world. Cavell doesn't have much to go on: a pair of overalls and ill fitting shoes are his only clues. Along with regular beatings for his questions.
Corrupts Absolutely by Adam Tindall
Produced in Bristol by Show of Strength theatre company, Corrupts Absolutely tells the tale of four women who let themselves lose in an improvised world where anything they imagine will occur. From bathing in exotic waters to taking part in the birth of Christ, the four friends take a joyful journey that turns to fear when they discover that one of their number has plans for them all.
Autumn Terror by Jon Nash
The year is 1888 and the women of Whitechapel walk the streets with fear and trepidation. The brutal hand of Jack the Ripper tears the community apart, exposing its iniquities and leaving no one free from blam. Walking through the reckoning, young Sarah struggles to decide. Will she risk escaping to an uncertain future or stay and take her chances with the devil she knows. Jon Nash is a young playwright of enormous promise, winning a 2006 BBC award for this play.
Iris Sunday by Jayne Newton-Chance
Iris Sunday recently received a rehearsed reading as part of Theatre Royal Plymouth Summer Scenes project where some of Devon's established and emerging playwrights got the chance to explore an early draft or idea for a play. Jayne reapproached this story, written some years ago, of a woman who's last days of terminal illness are spent with an unlikely advocate; a rather stuffy trainee counsellor. This touching and humorous look at a difficult subject received moving feedback from audiences at the Summer Scenes event. Watch this space for news of any developments!
